Tethered or Untethered? What's the difference?

A Tethered charge point is a charge point that has a cable coming from the charge point with a plug that plugs directly into the car.

An Untethered charge point is a charge point that has a Type 2 socket in which you plug your own cable in, which is usually supplied with the car.

There's pros and cons to both. A few examples are;

  • Tethered is more convenient as you don't need to get the cable from your car each time you want to charge.

  • Untethered is often more visually appealing as it doesn't have a long cable attached to it, the Andersen charge point has a unique way of dealing with this.

  • It's easier to replace a cable due to damage if the unit is Untethered.
